Lewis sighs.  “That poor lass has a hard road ahead.”

“Beatrice has her parents to help her, sir.  Studies say that a supportive familial--”

“Bollocks.  You heard what she told her dad.  ‘You were supposed to protect me.’  An’ he didn’t.”

“He couldn’t,” Hathaway corrects.

“You think that matters?” Lewis scoffs.

“Yes, sir.  She’ll always remember that her parents took her side. They didn’t blame her or pretend nothing happened.  That matters.  Sir.”  Hathaway’s mask slips only for an instant.

Lewis forgets this conversation for two years, until the day he sees the piano in the summerhouse. . . and finally understands.

Well, we don't know for certain what happened in the past, but he's got Robbie on his side now.

Thanks for commenting.

Meep! Poor James.

I really, really want to read more fic exploring James's backstory and childhood, because I'm a complete sucker for angst and hurt/comfort. But this drabble says so much in just a hundred words.

This is the first Lewis fic I ever wrote, and it insisted on being written. I fell in love with the drabble format when writing in another fandom. Done right, it's very intense, and ends with a kick.

James's childhood is fascinating to speculate about, and many writers have tackled it. again, I'd urge you to visit www.archiveofourown.org.
