Lewis fic: Armour (drabble)

Author: lindenharp
Title: Armour
Characters: James Hathaway
Genre: gen, drabble, angst
Length: 100 words
Rating: All ages
Spoilers/Warnings: none
Summary:
Sometimes, James needs his armour. A closer look at a scene in Dead of Winter.
A/N: Beta by wendymr.

Why Crevecoeur?  With luck he’ll only have to ask a few questions before moving on.  Perhaps he’ll speak to some newly-hired groundskeeper who’s never heard of James Hathaway.  And if God is at all merciful, he won’t encounter His Lordship.

You are not a frightened child.  You’re an adult, a university graduate, a policeman.

He spots familiar faces ahead.  DCs Hooper and Parry, investigating the shooting.  Oh, joy.

He puts on a smirk and a swagger like a warrior donning armour, and dredges up some historic trivia.  If he’s sufficiently annoying, perhaps they won’t notice that his hands are shaking.

THE END

I love the insight here. Yes, it's pretty clear that James uses his intellect and education to keep people at a distance from time to time, but I hadn't thought of him using it as a defence mechanism, so that people can't see things he doesn't want to let them see. Very strong final line - very nicely done!

Thank you!

When I reviewed this scene on the DVD, it was so clear to me what was happening. As he's driving up to Crevecoeur, James is looking tense and unhappy. As he approaches Hooper and the other DC, he pastes on a smile. And his "Musket, Hooper!" is so condescending that I almost want to slap James, even as I know that it's self-defence.
