So I joined drabble_las, my first time in in a Last Author Standing competition.  The prompt was "I'm not bad.  I'm just drawn that way.".  We had the option of doing a fandom-based drabble (any fandom) or an original fiction drabble.  I chose original fiction, because I wasn't quite sure how to apply that prompt to any of my fandoms.  There were 6 drabbles in the Original Fiction category.  I didn't win, and didn't expect to.  I got 10 votes for, which was pleasing, and 4 votes against, which was confusing.  I await copies of the feedback to find out what people gave as their reasons for their votes.  My drabble is below under the cut.  If you want to see the other entries, they're here.

Story Title: Philosophy of Life
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: adult language, implied violence

You want an explanation?

My stepdad called himself a philosopher. Whenever he got fired from another job, he hid inside a bottle of cheap scotch and mumbled about ‘the human condition’. “Biology is destiny, Eric. I'm a weak man, not a bad one. I am what God made me.”

Left home at sixteen, swearing I’d never be like him. No blaming God, fate or biology. I’m a self-made man. I am who I choose to be. Understand? Good. Now, gimme your fucking wallet before I stick you. I don't drink very often, but I like Glenmorangie, and it’s not cheap.

Thank you! I have a fondness for twisted, especially in drabbles.

I was one of your votes for, so you'll get my feedback eventually anyway - I loved this. I thought it was the only original drabble that really painted a full picture of the character - hard to do for original work in 100 words exactly. And it makes sense, now that I think about it, that you'd know best how to do this, because that's exactly what you did with Valiant Tales - take an unknown character, and in 100 words, show us exactly who they are.

Thanks! (And in a bit of tidy symmetry, I voted for you.)

I had a similar conversation with someone in chat. She commented about the difficulty of creating an original character in 100 words. Later, it occurred to me that I'd a lot of experience doing that in Valiant Tales. If anything, this was easier, since I didn't have to put any effort into describing the background setting.
